We took LuLu to register for school today. Her face beamed as we pulled into the lot, with the Little Man in the back shouting “That’s my school! My school!”
“No, brother,” she quickly corrected him, “that’s my school!”
We all walked in hand and hand, Lu proudly walking tall.
When we entered the building, her excitement grew even more. She couldn’t get over the pint-size cubbies, the bright yellow fish in the tank, the school frog, the chalkboards, the letters made out of blocks. She asked Miss Dawn if they had glitter, too, and Miss Dawn assured her they had plenty of glitter for arts and crafts time.
I started to think about the day she was born, the way her eyes opened wide when light first hit. True amazement. And, still, her eyes light up when she sees geese crossing the road, a bird fly in the sky, or even tiny computer desks all lined in a row. I often look to her and the Man as teachers on how to really live life and view this incredible world.
School begins next Wednesday, and it is bittersweet.
Today, take a break to be in awe of something simple, yet miraculous. Look around you, and appreciate the hand that went into building the chair you are sitting in, the table you are writing on, the sky that you are looking out at. Reconnect with your inner child.
