For Immediate Release:
Mother Daughter Team Celebrates 10 Years, 16.5 Tons of Weight Loss, and a National Message of Inspiration & Health
When the mother-daughter team Jennifer and Laura Tuma, of Curves in South Edison, New Jersey, opened the business 10 years ago, the mission was to give women in their community an inspiring place to complete aerobic and
strength training workout in a fun, supportive environment. They had no idea their cozy 1100 square foot store would become the starting ground for a national platform helping women transform their lives.
From TV and radio appearances, to magazine articles, and now, with a book deal from HarperOne (Harper-Collins), daughter Jennifer is spreading their message to millions of women around the world. And their members in Edison
are excited to be a part of it all!
You see, the mother-daughter team truly get what it’s like to be unhealthy and unhappy, so they approach every woman with compassion and understanding. After having many battles with self-care and self-esteem, Jennifer finally transformed her life from the inside out, ditched dieting (and all the self-loathing that goes with it), and ironically lost over 100 pounds! Her philosophy is simple: we nurture what we love.
“Getting off of the crazy diets and by building a strong foundation of self-love,” Jennifer says, “we begin to nurture our bodies well and we become healthy from the inside-out. The weight loss is merely a benefit of living with purpose, passion, and energy! We all deserve to nourish our bodies, and we are all so much more than a silly number on the scale!”
Jennifer is about having a spark for life, finding balance, and being who
we were each uniquely born to be. She also shares a message about volunteering — serving the world by using our unique gifts and connecting with others. She is an advocate for the internationally recognized, 100% volunteer organization, Enchanted Makeovers (http:www.enchantedmakeovers.org).
And, her mother Laura is living proof that our bodies and minds are connected. In 2000, Laura could barely walk across the street, her tendonitis was so bad. She struggled to do simple things like food shopping or go to the mall. When Jennifer brought her to a co-worker’s Curves facility, Laura was hooked. With the upbeat music, and simple friendly environment, Laura found a gym that she felt comfortable to workout in.
The only problem?
It was a far commute (almost 2-hours round trip) for them to go for a 30-minute workout.
The solution?
Open their own facility!
Before they knew it, the two were on a plane to Waco, Texas learning all about business ownership from Curves founder, Gary Heavin. Soon after, Laura’s daughter in law was doing the same thing – she opened a Curves in
Green Brook, and it became a true family business!
Within a few months, Laura’s tendonitis was better! She knew there was a ‘mental’ connection, having been unhappy with her work situation, as well as being physically inactive for so long. “By finding a business that I loved and a workout that made me excited, my body just immediately responded. It seemed nothing short of miraculous! And, it’s wonderful to have been a part of the Edison community for a decade, providing women with wellness & weight loss guidance and a fun, doable program,” said Laura Tuma. “We feel our success in Edison stems from not only the strength of the Curves brand, but our dedication to helping women to be the best version of themselves possible.”
Since the mother-daughter duo opened Curves of Edison in September 2011, women have been able to exercise in an environment designed strictly for them. And, the women in their club have lost 32,963 pounds and inches!
Under the direction of Richard B. Kreider, PhD, FACSM, scientists have put the Curves fitness and weight-loss program to rigorous testing, scrutinizing its effects on hundreds of women. The results? Curves works!
Women on the Curves plan have lost weight and kept it off, boosted their metabolism, lost body fat, gained muscle, and enjoyed several other significant benefits.
According to Laura, the Curves plan focuses on firing up the metabolism, small meals throughout the day, a broad variety of healthy food and strength training. Curves exercise program consists of thirty minutes of exercise three times a week, during which participants work all major muscle groups and receive a great cardio workout. It includes all five components of a complete exercise program: warm-up, strength training, cardio, cool down, and stretching.
In addition to a proven workout plan, Curves offers various programs to help motivate and assist women in obtaining a healthy lifestyle, including:
CurvesSmart personal coaching system, a new technology pioneered by Curves that offers a precision designed workout, moment to moment feedback and progress reports to keep members motivated while they work out; and www.CurvesComplete.com, an online weight-loss subscription service that provides subscribers with diet and fitness information, tools, experts and motivation to achieve their weight-loss goals.
“We look forward to continuing the Curves program in the Edison area and helping women achieve their goals, and the Complete program will be available in Curves facilities all over the world,” said Laura.
And, Jennifer Tuma-Young has a lot to offer Curves members as well.
