It was kind of a cold office- not temperature wise, just the energy. There were book shelves, but the books didn’t seem to have life in them. I felt like if I picked them up, on the inside there would be no pages. I just couldn’t get a read.
I had to meet with a new financial planner. And in our discussion, he said it, “But really, in reality, what do you do?”
“Um, really in reality, I am a writer. I am a speaker. I work with magnificent clients.”
“But, no offense, that’s not business. That’s not scalable. That’s you. In reality, not good for the long term,” he shook his head while saying it. I felt like I was sitting across from Donald Trump telling me “You’re fired.”
He continued, “when you had your own storefront member-based business years ago, it seemed to have more stability, predictability.”
Then, I actually pictured myself in a tiny desk as he cracked the whip down on it shouting, “Wake up!”
“Well, I know right now it’s not scalable, and I guess not so predictable. But my vision is-” and then his under-the-breath laugh stopped me from finishing my sentence.
“Vision? Do you have your business plan? You need a business plan,” he scolded.
I took a deep breath in. My initial reaction was to just excuse myself, so I began to stand up. I figured maybe this wasn’t a great fit. Then, it dawned on me. I have a business plan called purpose, a bank called faith, and the greatest investor in town is reading the details as we speak.
So I stayed. And I’m so glad I did. I know God placed me in his office for a reason. I will learn alot from him. And later I realized, we both have much to learn and much to teach each other.
He finally let me tell him my dreams and some things I had planned. Not completely “sold”, but I felt my passion chipping away at him a bit. I’ll make a believer out of him yet.
I guess that’s why kites come with string – a little bit of tension, a little bit of play. You can’t enjoy your kite if it floats away.
