The other day I took the kids to the craft store. Armed with $2.00 each, they were on a mission to pick out something fun we could do on a muggy day. LuLu spotted modeling clay, and exclaimed, “Play dough shaped like crayons??? Ha!! Mommy, that’s PERFECT!” The Little Man agreed, and we were on our way with 2 boxes of modeling clay, totaling $3.78. Now that really is perfect!

When we arrived home we got right to work on creating shapes. Man wanted a snow man, with a hat, Lu wanted an ice cream cone with a cherry on top. Next we made a family, then a flower, a basketball, a birthday cake, then the alphabet. We molded and messed up and started again and mixed colors and created for hours on end. It was a blast.

It made me think how gratifying it is to create something. There’s a joy that we get when we start from scratch – the song writer writing music, the builder building a home, the baker baking bread, the farmer planting vegetables, the artist creating a sculpture…I could go on but you get the drift.

I know the call for convenience has changed the level that we need to “create” from scratch. At one time, there was no Betty Crocker mix, we had to bake cookies with eggs, flour, and sugar.

But, the modeling clay also made me think about the power we each have to literally create something out of nothing. Look at the highways where once there were dirt roads and before that just land. It is incredible. I think that’s why I love the show Project Runway so much, just watching them sketch a concept and bring it to life is inspiring. We all have that power, each with our own talents. When we combine our unique gifts with the power we have to create something, the sky really is the limit.
